Unsettled Weather Marks the Start of the New Week

The new week brings a shift in weather, with unsettled conditions replacing the brighter skies seen by many at the weekend.

Monday morning will start bright for much of the UK, but a weather front advancing from the west will bring rain to northern and western areas. By the end of the day, most regions across the UK are likely to experience some rain, though the driest weather may persist in parts of southeastern England. Southwest Scotland is forecasted to bear the brunt of the rain, where a Yellow Rain Warning is in effect from 2 pm through the evening.

Andy Page, Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, commented: “The band of rain will steadily track eastward across the UK on Monday. In the warning areas, rainfall totals are expected to reach 25-35 mm, with some locations seeing up to 60 mm. This rain will be accompanied by strong southerly winds.”

Tuesday will bring a brief reprieve with brighter skies and breezy conditions, but scattered showers—some heavy—are still expected.

A Return to Unsettled Conditions

From Wednesday onwards, the weather is set to turn unsettled again. A Yellow Rain Warning is already in place for Wednesday and Thursday across parts of western Scotland. During this period, heavy rainfall could accumulate to 75-100 mm in some areas, with the potential for up to 150 mm on western-facing slopes. The rain will be coupled with strong southwesterly winds, with gusts possibly reaching 50-60 mph. These winds, combined with high spring tides, could cause coastal impacts.

Is Ex-Hurricane Ernesto to Blame?

Ex-Hurricane Ernesto, which previously affected Bermuda, has now weakened to a tropical storm but may briefly regain strength before weakening again over the cooler waters of the northwest Atlantic on Tuesday. Despite this, the remnants of Ernesto still contain a significant amount of energy. Deputy Chief Meteorologist Tony Wisson clarified: “Headlines suggesting Ernesto will directly hit Britain are misleading. While the storm itself will dissipate before reaching us, the warm, moist air it carried will merge with a mid-latitude weather system. This will contribute to unsettled weather across the UK, particularly in the north and west, with heavy rain and strong winds expected.” He added, “Though August is often associated with fine weather, stormy conditions like these are not unusual for this time of year, as we have seen in previous years.”
