- Yorkshire Air Ambulance: Saving Lives Across YorkshireAbout the Charity: Yorkshire Air Ambulance (YAA) is an independent charity dedicated to providing a life-saving rapid response emergency service across the vast expanse of Yorkshire. With a mission to serve the 5 million people residing in this region, the YAA operates seven days a week, 365 days a year. On average, the charity responds to an astounding four incidents each day.
History and Fleet: Founded in the year 2000, the Yorkshire Air Ambulance currently operates two state-of-the-art Airbus H145 helicopters. One is stationed at their Nostell Air Support Unit near Wakefield, and the other is based at RAF Topcliffe near Thirsk. These helicopters were introduced in 2016, featuring advanced technology, a more spacious cabin, and custom medical equipment for the Critical Care team. The daily crew comprises a highly skilled pilot and two Critical Care Paramedics, with the Nostell helicopter also including a Critical Care Consultant experienced in A&E and anesthesia.
Advancements: In 2017, the Yorkshire Air Ambulance initiated Night Vision Operations, enabling the helicopters to fly in darkness, and they also introduced the capability to carry blood on board, making it possible to administer crucial transfusions at accident scenes or in transit.
Training Facilities: In 2019, the charity unveiled a cutting-edge simulation training suite at their Nostell airbase, complete with a 360-degree projection system. This state-of-the-art training facility allows their medical teams to practice various incident scenarios, from road traffic collisions to home emergencies, using life-like manikins.
Funding Needs: To keep their two helicopters operational and in the air, the YAA must raise £12,000 every single day, which totals to a staggering £4.4 million annually. The charity heavily relies on the generosity of donors to continue its life-saving work.
Community Impact: The Yorkshire Air Ambulance has made a profound impact on the community. They aim to reach patients in need as quickly as possible, transferring them to the nearest major trauma center with flying speeds of up to 160 mph. Moreover, 90% of Yorkshire’s population is within a 20-minute flying time from either of the YAA’s airbases.

- Kayanna Nicol, who survived a severe leg injury in 2019.
- Caroline Shepherd, who recovered from a near-fatal brain hemorrhage.

- Robert Wood, saved from a fall at Middleham Parish Church.
