Ripon Cathedral stands as an iconic symbol of Christianity’s enduring legacy in England. Its history is deeply rooted in the region and dates back to the 7th century, making it a testament to the long journey of Christianity’s establishment in England.

The cathedral’s origins are attributed to St. Wilfrid, a 7th-century bishop who played a pivotal role in introducing Roman-style Christianity to what was then the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria. He founded a monastery in Ripon, which was one of the first Benedictine monasteries in Northumbria. St. Wilfrid recognized the need for a proper stone church and commissioned craftsmen from across Britain to build one around 672 CE. This stone basilica was a rarity in Britain at the time, inspired by Roman architecture.

Ripon Cathedral’s history spans nearly fourteen centuries and has continuously served as a beacon of Christian faith in the city of Ripon and North Yorkshire. The cathedral, despite undergoing several rebuilds, still retains the original Anglo-Saxon crypt, making it the oldest surviving structure of any church in England. St. Wilfrid himself was laid to rest in this historic crypt after his passing in 709 CE.

Beyond its historical significance, Ripon Cathedral boasts several other intriguing features, including medieval woodcarvings adorning the choir stalls. These carvings are believed to have inspired Lewis Carroll, the author of “Alice in Wonderland.” The cathedral’s role as an inspiring and spiritual place has persisted throughout the centuries, attracting visitors and worshippers alike.

In addition to its historical and religious importance, the cathedral also hosts various events and activities. Notably, the Ripon Cathedral Beer Festival is a popular and family-friendly event that features a diverse selection of beers and drinks, accompanied by live music and delicious barbecue food. The proceeds from this festival support the cathedral’s vital work.

Ripon Cathedral’s rich history, stunning architecture, and ongoing cultural events make it a must-visit destination for those interested in exploring the historical and spiritual aspects of England.
